(Construction.IndustryNews247.Com, March 11, 2015 ) Southfield, MI – There are many people that want to go into business for themselves, but over 50% of all business of all business fail. Chris Tellis has been the owner of a heating and cooling business for nineteen (19) years in Metro Detroit. Chris Wechner of The Ultimate Analyst (http://www.TheUltimateAnalyst.com) interviewed him and got him to share his secrets of his business’ success.
HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, but most people know Tellis as a heating and cooling repair, maintenance, and installation guy.
He worked at ABC Warehouse in retail management before starting up his own business. Even with that background, he was not prepared to own a business servicing furnaces, boilers, duct work, and air conditioners.
He said, “(Getting to know your business thoroughly is) what I encourage anyone to do is know your industry from A to Z, because you don’t know the cycles of (that particular) business. You can be hurt, seriously!”
When asked about how he built his clientele in the beginning phase of his business versus what he does today, he responded that when he started, he used telemarketers in the mornings and afternoons. Today, he relies almost exclusively on referrals.
Tellis said, “Today basically is mouth-to-mouth, and you can’t beat mouth-to-mouth (advertising). It’s the best thing out there to have customers that are pre-sold by people that they know….They that person (perceives you) as the right person for that job, based upon that recommendation.”
He also gave tips about how he gets his referrals and things would do differently if he were to restart his business today.
A video of the interview is posted at http://chriswechnermarketingideas.blogspot.com/2015/03/business-feature-chris-tells-southfield.html and notes from the recording are there, also.
