download The Tuvizo Reflective Safety Vest provides high visibility in the day and excellent reflective qualities at night for running, cycling, walking, and other outdoor pursuits. (Construction.IndustryNews247.Com, August 25, 2014 ) Sarasota, Florida -- Tuvizo, the popular reflective vest maker, recently posted an article on the company's official blog to shed light on safety measures in the U.S. and the U.K. designed to protect road workers from vehicular or heavy equipment accidents.
"Wherever you are in the world, there are road workers busy doing a day's work in the most dangerous of conditions," observes Jo Parkes from Tuvizo's PR Department.
Studies conducted in both countries on how to reduce the numbers of fatalities among road workers have consistently shown that high visibility clothing on its own is not sufficient to prevent these deadly accidents. Some form of reflective gear should also be worn, such as a reflective safety vest or a reflective belt, according to the article.
The Construction Safety Council in the United States, working with their Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) office, recommends a standard safety precaution wherein all workers, in both private and government projects, who are exposed to public vehicular traffic must be provided with, and must wear, warning vests marked with or made of reflectorized or high-visibility material.
These materials must comply with mandated safety standards with the highest level, Conspicuity Class 3, requiring that the wearer must be conspicuous through the full range of body motions at a minimum of a ¼ mile (390 m) and must be identifiable as a person.
Motorists, according to the article, can play their part in maintaining road safety by obeying the speed limits and warning notices around road works and keeping their head lights on so that road workers can see them clearly. When approaching a road construction area, rushing to the front of the queue in the hope that someone will let them in, should be avoided. Road warning signs should always be put up and kept clean so it is always visible to incoming traffic. Workers also need to know how to direct traffic correctly with either hand signals or the use of traffic lights and radios. Other methods mentioned in the Tuvizo article include the use of highly visible speed traps to persuade motorists that speed limits are there for a purpose and must be adhered to. "Whether you are on the road for a minute or a day, make sure you are as safe as possible by donning a reflective vest to increase your visibility to motorists and heavy equipment operators," advised Ms. Parkes.
